My father was a traveling salesman, and he would tell us many stories about his adventures on the road. This is one of them, taking place in the late 1930's about a young black boy who made the terrible mistake of accidentally running over a white child, and how the White community and the Black community, on the other sides of the tracks, dealt with the tragedy.
My sister originally wrote this story back in the 60's but could never get it published. Later I went through it, and adjusted the story slightly, but it is mostly her work.

Whimper was a well written story about how white people in the old South punish even accidental transgressions by Blacks. Yet the story describes how the mother of the white girl who was accidentally run over and the black mother whose son was severely punished felt and attempted to prevent more extensive bloodshed. The interesting thing is that the black mother’s grief enabled her to have the courage to prevent greater bloodshed. Is this a true story, I believe that about 90% was probably true. I am not sure whether her actions could’ve actually prevented a much serious racial incident. I highly recommend that you read this book, it's a short read.Product details
